This holly hill is the perfect amphitheatre over the coastline from Esposende till Póvoa de Varzim. From this place you can see all the final course of the Cávado River and enjoy a fantastic view over the city and the surroundings of Barcelos. Besides, through its 297 meters high, it provides a panoramic view over the Hill of Sameiro and Bom Jesus in Braga and of Peneda-Gerês National Park to the east.
This place stands out for its environmental, cultural, archaeological, religious and ethnographic heritage: the Convent of the Calvary of Bom Jesus da Franqueira, The Fount of Life, part of the medieval Saint James Way, the Windmills, the Via Sacra, the Staircase and the Hermitage of Nossa Senhora da Franqueira. At the Hill of Franqueira, you can observe an unusual sequence of human occupation, from the Chalcolithic till the Middle Age, where it stands out a Romanized Castro and the ruins of the Castle of Faria. One of the most famous Minho's pilgrimages is held is this place, on the first Sunday of August. For its religious symbolism and connexion, this space is very important to the people from this part of Cávado.
