Penegate Tower

The Penegate Tower is an excellent opportunity to see an outstanding example of a medieval tower-house. It was built in the 14th century by Mem Ratcliffe, captain-general of the castle of Guimarães, which after obtaining royal license of Dom Dinis, the 5 of 1322 initiated its construction. However, the current tower was built on a primitive Tower dating from the 11th century and was the residence of Dom Egas of Penegate. Consists of a quadrangular battlements, and three floors, walls of stone with few openings declaring a defensive function and a gateway pointed in shape. The first few floors high narrow gaps can be observed, on facades stand out a counter with machicolation, circled windows and three-lobed and the top floor features an arched window broken window.
